Greatness Is Timeless - 7 Ways Van Halen Can Rock Your Business

Wow. I just got back from the Van Halen show at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC tonight and I must say, that had to be one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen - and I've seen over 300 easily...

It's truly amazing and inspiring when a band can last the test of time and still continue to thrill it's fans 30 years later. Eddie was on fire, Diamond Dave is still one of the top front men ever and Alex can give Neil Peart a good running. Adding Wolfgang to the lineup was not only poetic and perfectly fitting but also a stroke of marketing genius to get the younger generation excited as well.

It was great to see so many dads taking their teeneage sons to see one of the best bands ever proving that even old timers could jam as loud and as hard as anyone else.

So what can your business learn from one of the greatest rock bands of all time?

1) It's never to late to re-invent yourself. Greatness can always be resurrected. It's mediocrity that's doomed to die.

2) By creating a herd of raving fans you will enjoy a lifetime of success.

3) It's all about the memories and the experiences. Each song brought back a vivid picture of a time in my youth. Can you create that same lasting experiences for your customers?

4) Let them own a piece of you. The merchandise stands had lines out the wazoo for $35+ T-Shirts. Why they don't capture your email and up-sell you DVD copies of the show you just attended is beyond me...

5) Build your business around events. Create buzz and anticipation and gather large crowds together at a specific time.

6) Gather live testimonials. Everyone calling in to the radio station on the drive home making the DJ feel miserable because he was stuck in the studio and missed out reinforces the fact that you better not miss your opportunity to participate again in the future.

7) Everyone will soon document their experiences constantly. At least 1/3 of the crowd had their cell phone in use during the show. Either texting friends to figure out where they where (or to rub in the fact that they couldn't make it) but more importantly most where taking pictures or recording video or audio to go put on myspace, facebook or youtube. Keep your eye on the mobile space. It will soon eclipse the web.

So how do you think the magic of a rock concert can translate into savvy business marketing for your business?

It really strikes a chord (pardon the pun) of how important brand is and how there really is measurable equity in it. Van Halen timed it perfectly. I'm just disappointed I missed them when they came to my town.
